FAQ schema (technically FAQPage structured data) is a small block of code that tells Google and AI engines "this page contains questions and answers." It's one of the highest-leverage things you can add to a website: it makes you eligible for rich results, and it hands answer engines your content in a format they can quote directly. It's a cornerstone of Answer Engine Optimization.

Why FAQ schema matters

When your Q&A content is marked up with schema, search and AI systems don't have to guess what's a question and what's an answer — you've told them explicitly. That increases the odds of appearing in Featured Snippets, Google's AI Overviews, and chatbot answers. It also reinforces GEO by making your expertise machine-readable.

Step 1: Write real questions and answers

Use the exact questions your customers ask, and answer each in 40–60 words up front. Good FAQ content stands on its own even without the markup.

Step 2: Build the JSON-LD

The cleanest way to add schema is a <script type="application/ld+json"> block in your page's HTML. It lists each question with its answer, using the schema.org FAQPage and Question types. The answer text in the markup must match the visible answer on the page — Google requires the marked-up content to be present for users too.

Step 3: Add it to your page

  • WordPress: use an SEO plugin (Yoast, Rank Math) that has an FAQ block, or paste the JSON-LD into a custom-HTML block.
  • Wix / Squarespace: add a code/embed block containing the script.
  • Custom sites: render the JSON-LD server-side so crawlers see it without running JavaScript.

Step 4: Validate it

Run the page through Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator. Fix any flagged errors, then request indexing in Google Search Console.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Marking up questions that aren't visible on the page.
  • Using FAQ schema for content that isn't really a question and answer.
  • Letting the markup drift out of sync with the visible text.
